AboutWorks

Kateřina Dobroslava Drahošová (b. 1988) is a visual artist from the Czech Republic. The distinctive character of the landscape surrounding the small village in the Šumava region, where she spent her childhood is naturally reflected in her work. She currently lives and works alternately in České Budějovice and the Šumava region in Czech Republic. She did her Master's studies in fine art of University of Ostrava in the Painting Studio led by Professor Ak. mal. Daniel Balabán (2009–2015). During her studies, she completed study internships in Belgium and Finland, where she encountered biodynamic farming communities that influenced her perception of landscape and the relationship between humans and nature. Her work has also been recognized through nominations for significant art awards. In 2018 she was nominated for the Art Prize 11. Cena kritiky za mladou malbu at Galerie kritiků in Prague, and in 2014 she was nominated for the Startpoint Prize at DOX Centre for Contemporary Art in Prague.

Her artistic development has also been shaped by several international and European residencies, which provided space for experimentation and deeper reflection on the relationship between art practice, landscape, culture and everyday experience. E.g. : The flying tea house, České Budějovice (CZ, 2025), Kebbel Villa , Schwandorf (DE, 2024) Český soběstačný dům (CZ, 2024) Atelierhaus Salzamt in Linz (AT, 2019), Kunstfabrik Groß Siegharts (AT, 2019), Egon Schiele Art Residency in Český Krumlov (CZ, 2015), Czech German Cultural Center in Kvilda (CZ, 2014), Divo Institute in Kolín (CZ, 2013), Mustarinda Art Residency in Finland (2013).

Alongside her artistic practice, Kateřina is also a mother.
The experience of motherhood naturally permeates her artistic thinking and everyday creative process. Themes of care, attention to small daily moments, and a heightened sensitivity to time, rhythm and observation subtly enter her work and way of perceiving the world. At the same time, she is actively engaged in art education. She works as an art teacher and lecturer, where she focuses on developing visual thinking and sensitivity to artistic language among teenagers. In her pedagogical approach she connects contemporary artistic practice with education, encouraging young people to perceive creativity and visual expression observation, as reflection tools for and understanding of the world around them.

Kateřina explores elements that arise outside the studio, working directly in the landscape. She physically gathers local plants and herbs, which she later steeps or transforms into natural pigments. This process creates a herbalistic map of specific places, preserving their material traces. Her practice engages with the relationship between interior and exterior and the fragility of the contemporary world. Drawings, diary entries, and works on paper are her primary media, translating these experiences into abstract visual forms.

She believes that attention is one of the most valuable forms of care in today’s world. Seemingly insignificant moments—the quiet observation of a landscape, a small detail in nature, or a shared moment of presence—often carry the greatest potential to reshape how we understand ourselves and our relationships with others.
